I truly loved my experience at WLU studying E&FM. Two thing I’d say is this program is very great for individuals who want to work in ANY area of finance. Whether it is S&T, IB, Asset Management, Investment Finance, etc., it will prepare you to succeed as long as you work hard and network for opportunities you’re genuinely passionate about. #2: Do not let anyone tell you E&FM is not as good as BBA w Finance concentration because in the real world I have friends working in all of those industries from my program and are successful. Also, you end up being in the same finance classes that BBA kids are in AND have a strong economic background. It’s what you put into it that matters. Enjoy future and current students!!
First years, try your best to get a strong GPA (9.5 and up) so you can apply for the co-op program in the second term. Co-op was a very important tool for me to learn how to be professional in a workplace along with learning the key skills necessary to secure a full time job when I graduated. Also, co-op really showed me what type of work I really enjoyed.. and even the work I hated doing. So the transition to full time wasn’t intimidating because I felt ready. Next, employers take your co-op experiences into account especially if it’s related to the field you’re applying. So I highly recommend applying to the co-op program because it can really boost you in the work force. Lastly, although I have endless positive things to say about Laurier’s business/econ co-op program, it’s not the be all end all. My best friend has secured a top tier job at a bank but he did have to network and work harder than I did. & with that being said, there are less options as an intern than as a “co-op”. So either grind really hard in first year and get in the co-op program, or grind networking in years 2-4 if you choose to DIY. Good luck!!
