Yeah communications and media is alright, but it’s big on theory. You don’t learn a lot of practical skills like how to design websites. The only skill I really learned was how to do professional research, which I figure is useful for some professions. The Carleton course is quite supportive of Marxism, which surprised me because Stalin, Lenin and Mao killed a LOT of people, and I don’t know why this ideology is taught so explicitly. I did have a breakdown partway through my third year and wonder if I’d learned anything that would help secure my future, but I decided to continue because I’m close to graduating and there are a couple of decent jobs. I think most skills you learn in communications you can pick up through reading the news or non-fiction books, but at least the professors in Carleton are very enthusiastic about the subject, so that’s a plus. Pick communications if you’re interested in using a computer a lot. The workload isn’t that intense for the first 3 years.
